Barry Smerin is a graduate of the Universities of Cambridge (Modern Languages) and London (Hebrew Literature and Jewish History). He was a staff translator and reviser for the EU Council and the European Parliament, and subsequently Head of the Translation Division of the European Space Agency. Since turning freelance in 2003, he has worked mainly for the European Commission, the European Parliament, Oxford University Press, Le Monde Diplomatique, and the CVCE in Luxembourg. He has a special interest in historiography and is currently translation editor of the OUP’s multi-volume series Germany and the Second World War. He translates from Polish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Hebrew and Yiddish.
